Basis of the edition

The present edition is based on the photographs available at the Mainzer Photoarchiv of the Hethitologie Portal Mainz, as well as the available hand-copies and relevant secondary literature up to 2019. When the original manuscripts have been collated, this is noted in the commentary.

Commentary

Previous editions: Hazenbos 2003: 115-16.

Güterbock 1946: 483 suggested that this fragment may constitute a join to KBo 2.1, but this seems impossible based both on the dimensions and shape, and on the sign forms (KBo 2.1 regularly used the simplified ALAM, see Cammarosano 2018: 190-91, whereas KBo 2.16 does not). The fragment represents the incipit of a cult inventory in which several cult images are listed and described, each one being related to a specific deity. Note the mention of objects “hanging from the neck of the Storm god” (i 3).

i 4-8: For other cases of bowls used as cult images, see KBo 70.109+.

i 10: For SI.BÚN, cf. commentary on IBoT 2.103 ii 12′ and KBo 2.1 rev. iv 2.
